Rennie Mackintosh Art Nouveau inspired silver jewellery designs

Do you love the simple, elegant style of Art Nouveau design?  Then you may be interested to know that 2018 marks the 150th anniversary of the birth of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, an iconic name in the story of Art Nouveau design.

Born in Scotland in June 1868, Charles spent much of his life living and working in Glasgow and married another talented Scottish artist, Margaret MacDonald, who shared his design ideas.  Having trained as an architect he went on to design many innovative buildings both in Glasgow and beyond.  Examples of his work can still be seen today, such as: the Glasgow School of Art (where he and Margaret first met and fell in love), Queens Cross Church and the Willow Tearooms, all located within his home city.

His style was easy and light, encompassing elements of European modernism and Asian influences, especially from Japan. Powerful rectangular designs alongside soft curves and stylised motifs from nature, such as leaves and flowers, became part of his unique design pallet. Mackintosh’s work has endured the test of time and still inspires all kinds of designers today, from furniture to jewellery.

We’ve taken cues from Charles’s Art Nouveau style and items from our jewellery collection evoke the style of the 1920s and draw from its timeless beauty. Take a look at our range of pendants; from the strong angles in our rose gold and sterling silver cz Be Amazed to the subtle circles of our Silver Amethyst Rennie Mac.
