Well… Christmas is nearly here. In fact everyone seems to have got into the Christmas spirit very early this year – even way back at the beginning of November! I think everyone wants something to look forward to and celebrate and even if we can’t see all our loved ones – Christmas is a perfect excuse to treat ourselves a little bit.
I’m really hoping that the garden centres haven’t run out of trees yet because we won’t be getting ours until my son is back from university next weekend. We have to have two trees as well. One for my two boys to decorate – even though they are 17 and 20 this still looks tacky (in fact they delight in the tackiness!) with multi coloured lights and some very dodgy decorations from over the years. My tree, on the other hand, is as designer as I can make it and no-one else is allowed to fiddle!
I love Christmas, always have. I think it comes from having wonderful family Christmas’s when I was little, with stockings (well a pillowcase) from Santa, decorations, wonderful food and all the family around. As I have got older, I have tried to create the same kind of Christmas feel and make it as magical for my children as it was for me. Now they are all grown up – we still love the traditions around Christmas; from watching a Christmas film every night (Deck the Halls, Love Actually and Elf all make the top list) and the fact we are together playing silly games and eating too much.
Presents obviously play a key part in Christmas and looking at those brightly wrapped and ribboned gifts under the tree is another part of the excitement and magic of Christmas.
So why do we give gifts to each other at Christmas?
One of the main reasons we have the tradition of giving and receiving gifts is to remind us of the presents given to Jesus by the three wise men. Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh. And Christmas itself is really about the gift God gave to the world in the form of his son, Jesus. As it says in one of the most famous bible verses John 3:16 ‘God loved the world so much, that he gave his one and only Son, so that whoever believes in him may not be lost but have eternal life.’
All over the world families and friends give presents to each other. Most children believe in a magical gift bringer – whether this be St Nicholas, Santa Claus or Father Christmas. In Germany they believe is Christkind, in Spain, the three wise men and in parts of Italy, an old lady called Befana.
The presents are left in lots of different places too. In most of Europe, the presents are left in shoes or boots put out by the children. In Italy, America and here, presents are left in stockings, often left hanging by a fireplace or at the end of the child’s bed. This traditional of hanging stocking up comes from the story of St Nicholas. In many countries, presents for friends and family are put under the Christmas Tree. In the UK, they are often opened on Christmas day morning with all the family together. We open ours after lunch when all the work has been done, and you can enjoy a glass of something nice by the fire.
So now we know where the traditions come from – the big question is what to buy for the people you love. I know it should be easy, but I don’t think it ever is and it really can be quite overwhelming if you have a long list of people to buy for.
Here at Cavendish French, we thought we’d try and help you with some of our present ideas for friends and family this Christmas, and with all our jewellery pieces handmade from fine 925 sterling silver and set with AAA+ cubic zirconia, you can be certain that you will be buying a quality gift which they will treasure for ever.

Finally, what about a gift for someone you love …. can we suggest our Celestial Infinity Pendant. This gorgeous pendant is hand-made in sterling silver with a micro-set cubic zirconia infinity design and free floating cubic zirconia stones in the centre which spin and dance as you move. The perfect jewellery gift to show a loved one your endless love. If your budget is a little more limited - how about a shiny pair of sterling silver heart studs such as our Polished Little Silver Heart Earrings. A lovely simple gift which will say it all without costing the earth.

We all hope you have a wonderful Christmas and that 2021 is a brighter and happier year for all of us.
